The first in a series of contemporary carpets designed by Rashid Rana is the highly pixelated Pieces of One, which is directly inspired by a 1920s Kashan rug, a lustrous silk antique selected for its sophisticated patina. Pieces of One intentionally appears as if the carpet is being viewed at the granular level of individual knots. Rana’s carpet design references the beginning of the digital rendering of a highly detailed image, while also representing its reduction to the essence of its refinement in terms of form and colour. In this deep collaboration with Aspura, 27 yarns were chosen or specially dyed for the project. The construction of the carpet is exceptional, with even the binding being woven in the 27 colours - an extremely rare process. Later carpets in Rashid Rana’s series will develop the digital pixels into colourful glitches and more abstract representations of traditional carpet motifs.
